Vitamin B5 Benefits

Science

Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, is water soluble and is essential for synthesising coenzyme-A. Vitamin B5 helps break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats into energy.

What is Vitamin B5?

Vitamin B5 is one of the eight B vitamins, all of which are crucial for the metabolism and conversion of food into energy. Vitamin B5 is found in most vegetables, as well as a number of other sources, but is not created in human bodies. We, therefore, need to consume it through the food we eat.

Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid or Pantothenate. The word pantothenic is derived from the Greek word “pantou,” which means everywhere. This is because almost all foods contain at least a small quantity of pantothenic acid.

Vitamin B5 benefits

Pantothenic acid benefits are broad and varied. As it plays a part in so many of the body’s functions, it can be considered to benefit the entire body.

One of our favourite benefits of vitamin B5 is the effect it has on our skin, hair and eyes. It has been shown to improve the volume and shininess of hair, while also improving the texture if it has been damaged by heat, styling or colouring.

Another important vitamin B5 benefit is that it enables our liver and nervous system to function properly. Pantothenic acid is required for a healthy digestive tract, as well as for the formation of red blood cells, which carry oxygen through the body.

Vitamin B5 is also needed for the synthesis of coenzyme A. Coenzyme A is needed for converting food into cholesterol and fatty acids, which make up part of the cell membrane of our varied cells.

Coenzyme A also helps produce sphingosine, a fat-like molecule that helps deliver chemical messages inside the body’s cells. Finally, coenzyme A is required for the body to metabolise certain toxins and drugs.

Why take Vitamin B5 for skin?

Vitamin B5 benefits skin in a multitude of ways and is often added to moisturisers and dietary supplements for this reason alone.

Studies have indicated that vitamin B5 can help reduce facial acne and other related blemishes. It can even help heal skin wounds and is a well-rounded skin supplement.

When applied topically, vitamin B5 can promote healing from skin conditions such as eczema, diaper rash, poison ivy exposure, and insect bites. Its hydrating properties are also beneficial for anyone with sensitive or dry skin.
