A 2026 umbrella review published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum analysed 16 systematic reviews covering 113 RCTs and 7,983 patients. Collagen supplementation was consistently associated with improved skin elasticity, hydration and structural outcomes, as well as benefits for bone and musculoskeletal health. A Nature journal study found collagen supplementation reduced biological age by 1.4 years within six months.
Bones and joints
Bone is not the static, inert material it appears. It is living tissue, continuously broken down and rebuilt, and collagen forms approximately 30% of its composition, providing the flexible scaffold on which minerals are deposited.
From our early 30s, bone resorption begins to outpace formation. In women, the decline in oestrogen during menopause dramatically accelerates bone loss; research suggests up to 20% of bone density can be lost in the five to seven years following menopause.
