The benefits of Pea Protein

Pea protein comprises all 9 essential amino acids, is easily digestible and helps to promote the hormones that reduce hunger.

What is pea protein?

Pea protein is a highly refined protein derived from yellow and green split peas (Pisum sativum), available in powder form either as concentrates (via dry-milling) or isolates (via wet extraction). It’s valued for its clean, neutral taste and versatility across diets naturally vegan, gluten and dairy-free, and free from major allergens.

Is pea protein good for you?

Absolutely! Here’s why:

Complete protein with essential amino acids

Pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein though it’s slightly low in methionine, which is easily balanced by other foods.

Muscle growth and exercise recovery

Studies show pea protein stimulates muscle growth just as effectively as whey, especially when paired with resistance training.

Satiety and weight management

It helps you feel fuller for longer, supporting weight control by reducing total calorie intake.

Heart friendly and rich in iron

Pea protein may support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Plus, it’s a good source of plant-based ironthough you can enhance absorption by consuming it with vitamin C.

Easily digestible

Free from lactose and soy, pea protein is gentle on the gut and less likely to cause bloating compared to whey.

Environmental superstar

Peas require far less water and land than animal-based proteins, making them a sustainable choice

How is pea protein made?

Pea protein is produced via two main methods:

1. Dry fractionation (concentrate):

  • Peas are cleaned, dehulled, and milled into flour.

  • Air classification separates protein-rich fragments from starch and fiber—no water needed = sustainable  .

2. Wet extraction (Isolate):

  • Flour is suspended in water at alkaline pH.

  • Proteins are separated by isoelectric precipitation, filtered, neutralised, and spray-dried to achieve ~80–90% protein purity

Pros of pea protein

  • Vegan-friendly, hypoallergenic, and rich in BCAAs (e.g., leucine, arginine)

  • Proven muscle support and weight management benefits

  • Gentle on digestion, high iron content, eco-conscious

Pea protein is a safe, sustainable, and highly effective plant-based protein - ideal for vegans, athletes, anyone with food sensitivities, or those seeking cleaner nutrition. It’s nutritionally robust, eco-friendly, and supports muscle, heart, and digestive health.
