Can collagen improve your sleep?

Collagen

We all know the important role that sleep plays in our overall well-being. A good night’s sleep helps re-energise our minds, gives our bodies time to rejuvenate and keeps us healthy.

Unfortunately, some people struggle to get a good’s night rest, and in the long term, this can be detrimental to your health. Now, there are plenty of solutions out there, ranging from chamomile tea to sleeping pills.

However, many people don’t know that collagen can actually contribute to improved sleep as well. Yes, you read that right. Collagen can do more than improve your skin and joint health. In this blog, we take a look at the connection between collagen and sleep and how this protein can help you get a good night’s sleep.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a type of protein that plays several fundamental roles in our body. It can be found in our skin, hair, nails, joints, bones, ligaments and cartilage, and helps maintain the strength and elasticity of these body parts.

Collagen is naturally produced in the body. However, as we begin to age, production levels start to decline. This results in the decline of our physical appearance and can also lead to several health issues.

What’s the link between collagen and sleep?

Research has indicated that collagen can contribute to improved sleep. This is because collagen contains a protein called glycine, which plays an important role in many of our bodily functions.

Research looking at the effects of collagen on sleep found that, when subjects consumed  grams of glycine (around 15g of collagen), they fell asleep more quickly, slept more deeply and for longer. This improved sleep quality left participants feeling less fatigued, clearer-headed and more energetic.

The reasoning behind this improvement can be attributed to two primary factors, body temperature and serotonin levels.

Body temperature affects how quickly you fall asleep as well as whether you remain sleeping throughout the night. The body’s temperature naturally begins to drop as it gets closer to your bedtime, and during sleep, your body temperature will drop by 1 - 2 degrees Celsius. Glycerine helps to lower the body temperature which will help you sleep.

In order for our bodies to produce serotonin, it needs glycine. Serotonin, in turn, is needed to produce melatonin, which is the hormone that helps manage your circadian rhythms (your sleep and wake-up cycle).

How can you incorporate collagen into your diet?

Now that you understand the benefits of collagen for sleep, you may be wondering how to incorporate it into your diet. You can either add more collagen-rich foods to your diet or you can take collagen supplements

Consuming more collagen-dense foods will provide your body with various nutrients, however, sourcing all the right foods and ensuring you’re consuming the right amount of collagen can prove tricky.

Collagen supplements are a far more convenient option and will provide you with precise collagen dosages. At Rejuvenated, we offer several collagen supplements that contain added ingredients and vitamins to help boost your overall health. However, when it comes to a collagen supplement that will improve your sleep, we recommend our Collagen Shots drink.

Ready to improve your sleep with the help of collagen?

The importance of sleep cannot be overstated. Poor quality sleep can result in several issues. While there are teas and medications you can try, collagen can also help.

While it’s generally known for its skin and joint benefits, research has shown that it can also improve your quality of sleep. So why not consider trying a collagen supplement such as our Collagen Shots? To get the full effect you would need to take a scoop and a half. You never know, if it’s the nightcap you didn’t know you needed.
