Ever wondered why metabolism is important?
Often described as ‘fast’ or ‘slow’, the metabolism basically the rate our bodies consume energy (and burn calories). Our metabolism is made up of all the chemical processes that happen to keep your body alive and all its systems ticking over, such as breathing (your respiratory system), digesting food (your digestive system) and cell reproduction and repair (part of your circulatory system).
All these processes require energy, which is where your rate of metabolism (or metabolic rate) comes in to it. It requires around 40%-70% of your body’s daily energy consumption, depending on your lifestyle, body size and age.
If your metabolism is too slow, you can gain weight more quickly and feel sluggish. If it’s too fast you can find it difficult to gain weight and find yourself constantly hungry despite having a healthy diet.
Muscle cells require more energy to maintain than fat cells, so people with more muscle than fat tend to have a faster metabolism. This is why as we age, our metabolism slows down and we tend to gain weight more easily, because our muscle mass depletes. Genes are also said to play a role in our metabolism speed, although this hasn’t been fully discovered yet.
How to improve metabolism
Diet and supplements like our Re-set capsules help to support and enhance metabolism as part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Among its star ingredients is chromium, which works to enhance our insulin function to help maintain normal blood sugar levels and enable the body to burn fat at a healthy rate.

Your blood sugar then also drops, leaving you craving foods that are high in sugar and fat (we’re all familiar with ‘stress eating’!) which obviously doesn’t bode well when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. A 2015 study conducted by researchers at Ohio State University found that stress was linked to a slower metabolism in women too. So what can we do to combat these effects?
Taking adaptogens for stress
Ever heard of adaptogens? This slightly technical-sounding name has been everywhere over the past few years and for good reason. Rather than just another wellness fad, more and more people have been using adaptogens for stress, anxiety, and weight management, which is why we’ve included them in our new Re-set capsules. Adaptogens, otherwise known as adaptogenetic herbs, have been used in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and help support the body when you’re stressed.
When we’re in a stressful situation, our bodies go through a three-step process: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. During periods of stress, adaptogens work to support energy levels and cushion the after-effects stress has on the body, by helping to modify and regulate hormone production.
