Choline Benefits

Science

Choline is an essential nutrient needed for many body functions. Your body makes small amounts of this nutrient, but it is important to also get choline in through your diet or dietary supplements.

What is Choline?

Choline is an essential micronutrient and an important component of cell walls. It is an organic, water-soluble compound that is neither a mineral nor a vitamin. It shares similarities with B Vitamins and is often grouped together with these, as they play similar roles in the body.

Choline is found in most body tissues and contributes to normal lipid metabolism and the maintenance of normal liver function. Choline is also important for optimal metabolism function in general.

The body uses choline to synthesise phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, which are needed for cell membranes. This means that all animals and plants actually need choline to maintain their structural integrity.

Choline is also needed to produce acetyl-L-choline, which is important for neuro-activity that helps memory, muscle recovery, mood and other nervous system functions.

What are the benefits of Choline?

Choline has many different functions and benefits. It has an impact on metabolism, healthy liver function and muscle development. It also affects brain development, mental function, memory retention and the nervous system. In other words, it affects many different elements of a healthy functioning body.

This is because choline is an important chemical compound used in many chemical reactions in the body. As previously mentioned, it is present and useful in all cell membranes and therefore aids in the optimal functioning of every body.

Choline has also been shown to decrease inflammation and swelling related to asthma. Lastly, and possibly most importantly, Choline helps in the process of methylation, which is used to create DNA and promote nerve signalling.

Can pregnant and breastfeeding women consume Choline?

While there is not an abundance of reliable research on this topic yet, choline is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. In fact, some research has shown that choline reduces the likelihood of birth defects, making it a valuable supplement to take during pregnancy. It is recommended that you do not take more than a 450–550 mg dose daily.
