Why scientists are excited about the health benefits of pterostilbene?

Health, Healthy Ageing, Science

Pterostilbene is a nutrient from the same family as resveratrol. Scientists are excited about the health benefits of pterostilbene and here’s why. It’s an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory with preventive properties. It has shown to be many times more bioavailable than resveratrol and is easily transported into cells. Pterostilbene has two to four times better cellular uptake than resveratrol and stays present in the body longer before it is eliminated, however it is thought that combining these two ingredients together intensifies their benefits.

The molecule is found naturally in plants particularly berries, grapes and nuts. Although it is most abundant in blueberries, the actual content is miniscule. You’d actually need to eat almost 100 kilos of blueberries daily to see any true benefits from ingredient.

Why you should take pterostilbene?

One of the main reasons that this molecule is gaining so much attention is that it is thought to be a potent sirtuin activating compound. Sirtuins play many roles across a broad spectrum of biological processes, including those that have a part in age related degenerative diseases. Pterostilbene specifically helps to activate SIRT 1 which has influence over DNA proteins. SIRT1 also works in partnership with NAD+ to support DNA repair and its many other cell protecting activities.

It’s early days in the story of this incredible molecule but it is gaining much attention as scientists search for molecules that have a beneficial effect on the genes and how to protect against degenerative diseases.

Pterostilbene is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

It is a powerful free radical fighter that reduces oxidative stress. There is evidence to show that it may mimic a calorie restriction diet. Such a diet is a practise that is associated with helping to slow down the ageing process.

Studies are in their early days, but they are proving to be very encouraging. One such piece of research showed that it helped to reduce blood pressure in adults1. It did also indicate a slight increase in LDL levels in just pterostilbene alone but when combined with resveratrol there was no evidence of this.

Scientists are performing numerous trials on the molecule as there are indications that it may have anti-cancer effects including inducing:

  • Aptosis – the removal of potentially harmful cells.
  • Necrosis – the death of cells in living tissue caused by external influences such as toxins and infection.
  • Autophagy – an essential process where cells remove unnecessary or damaged components.

Pterostiblene may provide an anti-inflammatory effect with skin by reducing inflammation through autophagy.

An interesting fact is that resveratrol maintains its sirtuin activating properties during the wine making process but pterostilbene loses its ability to stimulate sirtuins during the process.

A Summary of the health benefits of pterostilebene

Pterostilbene works to promote sirtuins in the body, these sirtuins work with another molecule, NAD+ to support DNA Repair and healthy cells. Pterostilbene is more bioavailable than resveratrol in the body but together the two complement each other for enhanced results.

NAD+ levels can be boosted by adding Nicotinamide Mononucleotide as a supplement to your diet. It acts as a precursor for NAD+ which means that if NMN is present in the cells NAD+ will be formed.

Regenerate by Rejuvenated combines these powerful sirtuin activating ingredients with NMN into a potent youth promoting capsules.
