What is White Mulberry Leaf?

White mulberry leaf is a herbal remedy that has been used by a number of different cultures for centuries. White mulberry leaves grow on the Morus Alba (white mulberry) shrub. This shrub is native to parts of Asia and has long been used in native medicines in China.

White mulberry leaves are dried and powdered for medical use. The white fruit, similar to blackcurrants, can be eaten raw or cooked. The bark and roots are also used in certain traditional medicines, making the entire shrub edible and usable.

White Mulberry Leaf benefits

White mulberry leaves have been used to treat a range of ailments, but the most common use (and the one most backed by scientific research) is for type 2 diabetes. Chemicals in the white mulberry leaves work similarly to certain types of diabetes medication. They slow down the breakdown of sugar in the stomach, causing it to be absorbed more slowly into the blood. This helps to keep blood sugar levels in a good range.

White mulberry leaves are also used to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a number of common ailments. However, more research needs to be done to claim these benefits.

Can pregnant and breastfeeding women consume White Mulberry Leaf?

Mulberry leaves are considered safe for consumption. However, side effects may include an upset stomach, leading to bloating or diarrhoea. For these reasons, and because not enough research has been done on the impact white mulberry leaves have on the body, we recommend that pregnant and breastfeeding women avoid use until after lactation.
