Cordyceps Mushroom Benefits

Science

Cordyceps is a mushroom which is considered to have medicinal properties. It has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine and is credited as having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Over 400 species of cordyceps are native to Bhutan, China, Korea, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam. The most well-known of these is cordyceps sinensis, a mushroom with a long finger-like body. This is the cordyceps mushroom we use in our health and beauty supplements.

Cordyceps mushroom benefits

It’s believed that cordyceps, a medicinal mushroom, has a positive effect on the immune system due to its many anti-inflammatory effects. These powerful compounds stimulate protective cells that protect the body from infection and fight oxidative stress.

Mushroom cordyceps are full of youth-boosting antioxidants to help prevent oxidative stress and slow the signs of ageing of both skin and our body. One study has shown that it may promote glutathione, the master antioxidant.

Some studies suggest that the high content of polysaccharides, modified nucleosides and cyclosporine in cordyceps sinensis can help to improve the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and reproductive systems. It has also been shown to be beneficial for the digestive system and arthritis.

Several trials have shown that supplementation with cordyceps sinensis helps to increase exercise performance and enhances overall health in older adults. It’s believed that the ancient Chinese originally observed that when animals ate the cordyceps they became stronger. Farmers started to use the fungus in powder form to make tonics and teas.

Then lastly, the cordycep mushroom contains two components that help to control insulin and blood sugar levels to help protect against insulin resistance. It thus regulates blood sugar levels.

Other research has linked cordyceps to heart health and fighting cancer, but much work is to be done in these areas.
