Ingredient Green Tea

Green Tea

Green tea is a widely recognized anti oxidant and may help in the fight against disease. A green tea extract containing polyphenols and caffeine has been shown to induce thermogenesis and stimulate fat oxidation, boosting the metabolic rate 4% without increasing the heart rate.

Why a Green tea smoothie is a great way to start your day

We know that drinking endless cups of coffee isn’t good for us but how is it possible to get an energy boost at the start of the day.

The ancient cultures of Japan’s Okinawa credit their longevity to downing copious amounts of green tea, however if it you don’t fancy a cup of the green stuff then you might like to switch to a green tea smoothie.

But first of all, let’s have a look at why green tea is so good for us.

What is the difference between green tea and your regular brew?

Green tea has many more times the antioxidants that black tea has due to the difference in manufacturing processes. The leaves of black tea are fermented however green tea leaves are steamed instead of being fermented, which helps to retain the richness in nutrients. Green tea is grown at higher altitudes and some are still picked by hand. Handpicking is also believed to make the tea less bitter and keep its potency of nutrients to maximise healing goodness. The nutrients including polyphenols, catechins and other flavonoids found in red wine, dark chocolate and berries. These compounds help to protect our DNA from oxidative stress damage.

In particular, green tea is thought to protect a healthy heart, thanks to the flavonoids and antioxidants. There have been studies linking it to the prevention of Alzheimer’s by supporting the brain cells against free radical damage. Other trials suggest green tea can reduce appetite and help to enhance weight loss due to it having a mild effect on metabolism. It has been associated with promoting bone health, thanks to the green tea catechins.

Drinking green tea is one of a group of factors that may help to reduce the incidence of breast cancer, but it does need to be taken in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle.

Which is the most potent green tea?

You can find green tea in various forms, including Sencha, which is probably the most popular of Japanese green teas. There is also Hojicha, Genmaicha, Gyokuro and matcha, which is a high-grade, finely ground, concentrated green tea. There are numerous grades of matcha which affect the price and quality. It is made from green tea leaves grown in the shade, the leaves have a higher chlorophyll content which gives a deeply intense green colour.

When buying try to buy the freshest possible leaves. Apparently, leaves that are older than four months are beginning to lose their potency. Once opened, keep in a sealed tin or jar to maintain freshness.

There is some caffeine in green tea, but it is a much smaller quantity than in a cup of coffee. Comparatively a cup of coffee may have 100-400mg while green tea has around 35-80mg. However, if you are sensitive to caffeine limit to drinking just a few cups per day.

What is the best way to drink green tea?

If you swap from your normal tipple you need to avoid boiling water. If you boil the water let it sit for several minutes before adding to your leaves to avoid damaging precious antioxidants.

Pour onto leaves and allow to seep for 2 – 3 minutes and serve in a beautiful china cup.
