What are the health benefits of quercetin?

Quercetin contains flavonoids, flavonoids are an important group of natural ingredients that occur in abundance in certain plants and foods including fruits, vegetables, tea, cocoa and wine. If you’re wondering what the health benefits of quercetin are, then read on …

Many studies have suggested that flavonoids exhibit biological activities, including anti-allergenic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and vasodilating actions. However, most interest has been devoted to the antioxidant activity of flavonoids which is due to their ability to reduce free radical formation and to scavenge free radicals.

There are 6000 flavonoids that contribute to the colourful pigments of fruits, herbs, vegetables and medicinal plants.

Quercetin is categorised as a flavanol and is widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. They are found in a variety of foods including apples, berries, Brassica vegetables, capers, grapes, onions, shallots, tea and tomatoes as well as seeds and nuts. Growing conditions may affect the amount of quercetin within a plant.

Quercetin and its impact on longevity

Quercetin appears to have an effect on certain pathways including the NRF2 pathway1.

This pathway is the system the body turns on when it wants to make its ‘in-house’ antioxidants. When oxidative stress levels get too high, our body automatically activates the pathway.

The NRF2 pathway is associated with stimulating the longevity gene NQ01 (It’s associated with reducing the P-53 gene also called the rumour suppressor gene) which ultimately has a role in increasing the effects of NAD+. NAD+ declines with age and is responsible for just about every metabolic process within our cells.

The health benefit of Quercetins on senescent cells

It’s also a senolytic agent which works to kill off senescent cells (rogue cells) in the body to prevent them from secreting inflammatory substances that cause other cells nearby them to become damaged. As we age the number of senescent cells increase. These rogue cells are thought to be responsible for a host of degenerative diseases, it is thought that eliminating them can increase our overall health.

Quercetin is a potent senolytic agent while at the same time boosting NAD levels. Supplementing with quercetin can play a powerful part in our health and longevity.
