The 40’s are considered by many of us to be a ‘big birthday’, for me it was possibly the best years for my skin as I first discovered the true connection between skin health and diet. Good habits now will help to slow down the ageing process and our top tips will see you ease into your 50’s with glowing skin.
Tips for over 40 skin care
As we reach our 40’s we tend to have hormonal changes leading up to peri/menopause, during this time our oestrogen and progesterone levels start to decrease. Our skin becomes a lot dryer as we are no longer producing as much sebum, the oil which keeps the skin soft and supple. During this time Collagen production decreases significantly and elastin fibres lose their elasticity and become more brittle. The skin turnover cycle has now slowed down to around 60 days meaning a duller looking skin and pigmentation maybe more prominent. Lines and wrinkles can look deeper and the skin looks and feels thinner. Hormonal imbalance can also lead to breakouts for some women as we head for the peri/menopause.
Remedies for skin problems
Using Cleanser’s with AHA’s will help to remove dead skin cells
A serum or moisturiser containing Vitamin A will improve cell turnover to give the skin a glow and help improve product penetration.
Overlay this with a serum containing antioxidants and DNA repair.
Apply a vitamin C cream or serum in the morning to help to stimulate collagen and helps to brighten the skin.
Use an SPF of at least SPF50 daily to prevent further UVA/UVB damage. A daily sunscreen should ideally have antioxidants in and protect against infra- red and blue light damage.
Facial contours start to sag, this is possibly the biggest concern for women in their 40’s and older. Start to do some simple yoga facial exercises and consider firming treatments for the skin, micro current and nano current systems lift muscles gently to protect and prevent loss of tone, radio frequency treatments also help to tone and tighten.
Foods to protect your skin in your 40’s
Protection starts from within, a healthy diet full of antioxidants. Think colours of the rainbow for red for berries and peppers, orange for peppers, carrots, yellow tropical fruits, green leaves and avocados and for blues back to berries. Add good quality protein, lean meat, eggs, fish and overlay seeds for extra omegas.
Reduce alcohol and inflammatory forming foods such as dairy and processed foods. Alcohol is fine in moderation but it does dehydrate skin dramatically and can be a contributing factor in rosacea.
Supplements for your 40’s
