Astragalus the power house immune building plant

Astragalus for longevity

Astragalus is one of the most potent adaptogen herbs, it helps us to stay youthful, lower stress levels and fight disease.

What is astragalus?

Astragalus has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It comes from a bean or legume.  Only the roots of the astragalus plants are used and these are harvested when plants are 4-years old. There are over 2000 species of astragalus, however, most astragalus supplements contain Astragalus membranaceus. Currently over 200 compounds have been isolated and identified from the herb and these include polysaccharides, saponins and flavonoids.

How does astragalus help to keep cells young?

Telomeres are caps that protect the end of each strand of DNA, they are like the plastic tips at the end of a shoelace. Telomeres shorten each time a cell divides and act as a clock that signals to cells to age. Eventually the telomeres become so short that the ends of DNA are unprotected, and cells stop functioning or die.

Studies indicate that an enzyme called Telomerase may delay, stop or may even reverse telomere shortening. Several extracts from Astragalus membranceus root have been studied as possible telomerase activators1. Substances within astragalus root (called cycloastragenols and astragalosides) are believed to slow the ageing process by activating telomerase enzyme production. This is the process responsible for telomere regeneration.

Help cells live longer and function as they did when they were younger.

3 components give this plant special qualities for human health:

  • Flavonoids

There are more than 63 flavonoids including isoflavones, isoflavans, pterocarpans, flavonols, flavones, and flavonones. These components are important for cell signalling, their antioxidant properties and support a healthy heart.

  • Polysaccharides

These have anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Polysaccharides naturally have a high nutritive value and a positive effect on our immune and digestive system and help to remove toxins.

  • Saponins

Saponins are plant-based steroids that work to reduce cholesterol levels, improve the immune system and reduce inflammation. Studies indicate that they help to suppress the release of lipase, an enzyme that breaks down dietary fats. As a result, your body will absorb less fat from food.

What are the benefits of astragalus and how is it effective in boosting immunity and health?

Studies continue to reveal the reasons that astragalus has so many health benefits and how it works to protect our cells from disease and oxidation.

Anti-inflammatory action

Astragalus acts as an anti-inflammatory to help to protect from arthritis to heart disease. The saponins and polysaccharides help to reduce the inflammatory response in many diseases.

Immunity booster

Helps to regulate the body’s immune responses.

Boosts heart and cardiovascular health

The flavonoids act as antioxidants and help to protect against hardening of the arteries and the build-up of plaque in the arterial walls.

Helps to fight ageing

Astragalus helps to protect from free radical damage to prevent oxidative stress. It is also reputed to help to protect the telomeres – the caps at the end of our DNA strands.

Helps to protect against diabetes

The combination of saponins, flavonoids, and polysaccharides combine to work to prevent insulin resistance.

How can you include astragalus in your diet?

We love this herb so much that we incorporated it in H3O Night Repair and Regenerate. Just one capsule daily will help to support natural youthfulness and health.

How to set up a sleep plan for the perfect night’s sleep

How to set up a sleep plan for a perfect nights sleep

Do you find yourself nodding off watching the tv and then can’t get to sleep when you finally go to bed? Three hours later you’re awake and need a trip to the loo, followed by another hour of tossing and turning. The next morning you’re exhausted when the alarm goes off.  In fact, you feel even more tired than you did before you went to bed. If that’s you then you need to read on to discover the best sleep plan.

Good quality sleep allows for the healing processes to take place and has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. While poor sleeping patterns leaves us more susceptible to infection and can lead to inflammation. Is a good night’s sleep such a mystery?

In the 21st century, man has made amazing scientific discoveries and built incredible structures, but our bodies continue to work to a primal clock.  Circadian rhythms govern physical, mental and behavioural changes around our 24-hour day. They respond to light and darkness, day and night.  Even the LED digital time on a clock can trigger the rhythm to tell us it’s time to get up.

Our sleep pattern follows 90-minute cycles and ideally, we all need 4 to 5 sleep cycles a night.  Seven and a half hours sleep is a good rule to adopt, this is 5 cycles but with today’s lifestyle that can be near on impossible. This is where putting a sleep plan in place might help you.

If you want to get up at 6.00 am work backwards to establish the time that you need to be going to bed.  If you want to be awake by 6.00 am then time to be in bed by 10.30.

How to set up your own sleep plan

The best plan will be consistent but allow for flexibility.

  • Drink plenty of fluids through the day to hydrate as dehydration can cause you to wake in the middle of the night.
  • Cleanse your face a couple of hours before so you’re not too tired to remove make up.
  • Take a warm bath or do some yoga.
  • Don’t drink alcohol or eat during the hour before you go to bed.
  • Meditate or read for a short time and try to leave the stress of the day behind. You could try the brief meditation technique mentioned in the section on stress. Allow your mind some time to calm down, if something pops into your head then make a note and forget about it until tomorrow.
  • Kick the blue light habit. Personal mobile devices have given us great freedom and flexibility in both our work and personal lives. The downside is mobile addiction, the average person checks their device 85 times a day and up to a third check in the middle of the night.
  • It’s well documented that light from electronic devices can disturb sleep patterns. If you wear a fitness device 24 hours a day, try leaving it outside the bedroom for a few nights to see if your sleep pattern improves.
  • Night-time light in the bedroom will stimulate the circadian rhythms and trick you into waking up too early. You could buy an eye mask or invest in black out curtains or blind.
  • If you have a dimmer switch, turn down the lights, darkness naturally stimulates production of the sleep hormone melatonin. Go for an old-fashioned alarm clock without a digital display or try a daylight alarm clock. I absolutely love mine, the light starts with a beautiful deep amber hue and gradually gets brighter to replicate dawn at a pre-set time.  There are versions that include a sunset, and recordings of waves, tones or music to wake you up. So instead of waking up to the blare of an alarm in the dark, you wake up gently to a warm summer glow.
  • Be consistent with your sleep plan but don’t stress out if you miss on a few days.

Why Hydration is Important to Having a More Youthful Body

Why Hydration is Important to having a More Youthful Body

You are not just what you eat, you are what you drink.’ Dr Batnabgelidj

Water is the basis of life, we can’t live without it and hydration is one of the key factors in becoming more youthful. Water is abundantly free and yet so many of us don’t drink enough of this precious nutrient. In the second week, it’s time to increase your water consumption if you haven’t already.

Start your day by drinking water as soon as you get up and if you normally drink copious amounts of tea and coffee try to substitute every alternate one with a glass of water.

Water is our most important nutrient, it accounts for 50-70%1 of our body weight.  Low levels can cause inflammation and long term dehydration can lead to disease.

But just how much water do we need to drink? and how can we stay hydrated throughout the day?

Water is essential for health, although we can go for several weeks without food our bodies lose large amounts of water daily. It’s impossible to survive very long without it.  Water is vital for many essential body functions including digestion circulatory and excretory functions.  It is crucial to transport all water absorbable vitamins and nutrients into our blood stream and cells.

Water carries oxygen to every single cell in the body. It transports sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium and other salts in and out through the cell membranes to achieve electrolyte balance, without which nothing functions as well as it should.

When there’s enough water in the body, the blood and lymphatic fluid can flow more easily. Blood carries enzymes and nutrients to the organs, and the lymph fluid connects with the bloodstream to take waste away to the elimination routes (skin, nose, bowel, kidneys and lungs).

It helps to dilute acids in the body, making the blood more alkaline and the internal system healthier. It moisturises the skin, making it look younger, and is essential for brain health. We sometimes forget that the brain is an organ too – an organ that is almost entirely made up of water and fat. Water fluid cushions every joint and bone in the body and every single vertebrae is also surrounded by it, so if you want a healthy, pain-free back, get drinking! You can soon start to see howWhy boosting hydration can play an important part in being more youthful.

Why hydration can help us to be youthful:

  • Help kidneys excrete acids
  • Relieve stress
  • Reduce cholesterol levels
  • Stabilise blood pressure
  • Prevent headaches
  • Helps to prevent hangovers
  • Prevents fatigue
  • Help to prevent allergic reactions
  • Prevent dehydration and dryness or the skin Dehydration symptoms:
  • Dark yellow urine (pale urine is healthy)
  • prevent constipation
  • reduce skin problems.
  • prevent hunger
  • Mood swings
  • Aid joint problems

What is cellular water?

Intracellular water is the water content within the cells, while extracellular water is body water that is not inside the cells.  An increase of extracellular water can cause excess weight and swelling in the limbs.  Imbalances in hormones, protein and minerals can cause an imbalance and lead to high blood pressure.

Our cells don’t function at their best when they do not receive enough water and we function better if they have optimal water levels.

Can I improve the balance of my cellular water?

Yes at Rejuvenated we have a twofold strategy to combat this process and we can share how paying attention to hydration levels can help you to be more youthful.  The first is to strengthen cell walls and the second is to support the transfer of water across the cell membrane  this can help you to achieve healthy fluid balance.  Our collagen drink, Collagen Shots provides all the amino acids key to building cell walls which H3O Hydration can help to balance fluid levels in the cells.

You can help fluid balance by drinking H3O Hydration, a hypotonic drink to allow for speedy transmission of electrolytes and minerals through the stomach wall, into the blood stream and on to the cells.

Discover the Secret to Take Collagen and Hydration Levels to a New Dimension

Discover the Secret to Take Collagen and Hydration Levels to a New Dimension

Have you noticed how some people just bloom with health? Could the answer be in collagen and hydration levels? This radiance actually starts from within and we have the secret to help you get that glow.

If you’re a Rejuvenated customer and take Collagen Shots or H3O there is a good chance you already have that certain brilliance and that’s often the first thing our customers notice when they use our products, skin becomes more hydrated and plumped out. Understanding why can help you in the quest to maintain that youthful glow.

Collagen Shots is an award winning easy-to-drink beauty product that provides high levels of natural marine collagen to help improve the appearance and function of your skin by supporting and increasing the body’s natural collagen production. They are formulated from hydrolysed marine collagen with a low molecular weight so that it is easily digested and absorbed into the blood stream.

In fact the high bioavailability of the hydrolysed collagen enables 90-95% of the collagen peptides reach to reach the target sites in the body.

Clinical trials have shown that the specific collagen we use at the exact dosage in Collagen Shots can increase collagen synthesis and improve hydration levels in the skin.

The Radiant Skin Collection includes H3O Hydration to optimise hydration throughout the day and supply an array of antioxidants to tackle the stresses you place on your body daily. Ionic electrolytes increase the ability for fluid to leave the intestines and enter every cell in the body1. All cells can only operate optimally when they are well hydrated, not only that, hydrated cells are firm and plump. When these are skin cells, you’ll quickly notice the difference in skin firmness and suppleness.

Hydration is further improved by adding H3O Night Repair. 1 tablet taken at night to transfer water and nutrients across the gut wall and create a healthy fluid balance. Containing perfectly balanced ionically charged trace minerals (electrolytes) which act as catalysts for all the vitamins and other nutrients your body uses for maintaining good health. This electrolyte team of magnesium, copper, calcium and sodium are essential for fluid levels of the body to function at optimum levels. They are also responsible for delivering nutrients in to cells and allowing waste out.

Calcium is provided in both H3O Hydration and H3O Night Repair as this is a mineral that is better absorbed to ensure a constant supply for your body to utilise. Calcium is crucial to the maintenance of healthy skin functions including sebum regulation, lipid barrier function, cellular turnover and antioxidant production.

Not only do these products work from the inside by boosting collagen and hydration levels, they also have a huge impact on the superficial layers of the skin. Natural moisturizing factor or NMF is a collection of water-soluble compounds that are only found in the outer layer of the skin. This outer layer or stratum corneum was always thought to be biologically dead, however it has a dynamic structure where enzymes are active but require water to perform their functions.

The role of NMF is to maintain superficial skin hydration, so that skin will stay resilient and enzymes can carry out the function of breaking down dead skin to reveal fresher healthier skin below.

NMF is high in amino acids and inorganic minerals such as chlorides phosphates, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. These components combine to be incredibly efficient at attracting water from the atmosphere.

NMF dissolves within the water it attracts allowing it to form ionic interactions with keratin fibres to reduce the intermolecular forces between the fibres and increase elasticity of the superficial layers of the skin.

Collagen Shots are packed with the necessary free amino acids and H3O with its combination of minerals make them the perfect partners to boost the Natural Moisturising Factor. Find out more about our Award winning trio.

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Each day when you look in the mirror, your skin reveals an insight to your health and wellbeing. From digestive health, stress and so much more, it’s a good indication of what is actually happening below the surface. Stressed tired skin soon becomes sensitive but a combination of strategies can help to calm and nourish and restore your skin.

The current stresses of the Covid virus and changes in the season exasperate any underlying conditions. You may have noticed that your skin has become drier and more irritated as we head into autumn.

Skin provides a barrier between the inside of our body and our external environment. A healthy skin barrier means your skin is, even toned and smooth without inflammation or redness

Strengthening skin starts on the inside and a healthy microbiome is important for inner health and an outer glow. Now is a good time to establish a balanced diet with skin loving foods and try to stick to regular mealtimes. Think healthy fats, probiotics and antioxidant rich foods.

Here are the best foods to add into your daily diet

  • Omega 3 and natural oils in the form of oily fish, salmon, nuts, seeds and beans. These fats are nature’s own moisturisers and will help to calm inflammation.
  • Avocado healthy monounsaturated fats nourishing oil and b vitamins.
  • Eat foods with pre and probiotics daily – you can find probiotics in live yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and kombucha Prebiotics allow probiotics to go about their work more effectively. Include asparagus, bananas and garlic as these all contain inulin, a prebiotic.
  • Red onion is rich in quercetin which inhibits the release of histamines that cause reaction.
  • Tomatoes and peppers include quercetin to calm and lycopene also help to strengthens capillaries to reduce the problem of dilated blood vessels.
  • Berries are the perfect sweet treat as they are low in sugar and packed full of antioxidants.

Things to avoid sensitive skin

  • Alcohol, dilates capillaries, can cause flushing and even broken veins.
  • Spicy foods such as chilis can also cause flushing and capillaries to dilate. They excite the receptors in the skin that normally respond to heat.
  • Yeast and sugars ferment in the gut and can cause candida in the skin. A small amount of candida exists naturally on the skin but when this type of fungus starts to multiply it can cause a rash and rosacea. Avoid wine, beer, bread and gluten.

Self Care and Immunity health are key to your wellbeing

Self Care andImmunity Health

If you’re anything like me at the moment, you are ready to snuggle down under the duvet with the alarm set for spring. While we battle through and try to keep to the same pace, the animal kingdom knows  a thing or two about self care as their body clock is telling them to slow down and slumber through the cold winter months.

How to care for your mind and well-being this autumn

It’s hard to relax when we naturally tense our bodies up in the cold and biting winds. This is an important to make time to take care of yourself, get cosy and allow your mind and body to be calm. Wrap up warm and try to enjoy winters natural beauty rather than pining for spring and summer. Embrace the shorter days through fresh eyes as the days unfold. Take photos of a winter scene to see how it changes over the weeks and months to see it with a new charm.

Visualisation and mindfulness for self care

When we are apart from loved one’s visualisation and mindfulness can help to calm the anxiety and stress of missing our friends and family. Sit or lay down quietly and visualise the someone who has been a support to you and feel their love and warmth the embrace and wrap yourself in that love(1).

Foods to stock up on

Eating certain foods can help to improve your mood and also your natural immunity. Protein is essential in your diet as it provides the building blocks for the immune system. You can quickly increase your protein levels by adding Protein Smoothie, it has 21 grams of organic pea protein per serving along with healthy fibre and a prebiotic.

Eat fresh fruit and vegetables to get a healthy dose of vitamin C. Don’t just think of citrus fruit as peppers, green vegetables and berries all have a high content of this cold busting nutrient.

Everything is about gut health at the moment. One essential to supporting a healthy gut is to consume fermented foods. They’re packed with ‘good bacteria’ which is a vital part of our immune system. You’ll find drinks such as kombucha and kefir are packed with good bacteria. Add Immune Complex, it’s crammed with that gut loving bacteria, beta-glucans, vitamin D3 and a host of other ingredients to promote immunity.

Step your skin care routine

It’s a great time to invest in your skin with your favourite moisturiser and stay hydrated to prevent dry patches and inflammation. Drink plenty of water or herb teas to help skin stay moist. The combination of central heating and harsh weather can be particularly damaging for the complexion at this time of year. Collagen Shots and Aliol, our vegan omega 3 both work wonders by moisturising the skin from the inside out.

Keep up exercise levels for immunity health

It’s easy to skip going for a run or you might not be able to go to the gym depending upon lockdown restrictions. Try yoga or an online HIIT class, exercise is good for your body and promotes the wellbeing of your mind.

Most of all be kind to yourself and take life at a pace that feels right for you.

How to reverse the pandemic ageing and turn back your biological clock

How to reverse the pandemic ageing and turn back your biological clock

There’s no denying that the time spent under lockdown has been stressful. Many have noticed that fatigue is showing in our face while there is a general agreement that most of us have gained a few pounds. Journalists have created the term Covid face to describe pandemic ageing during the last 6 months. But please don’t think that it is all gloom and doom and before you think about booking that appointment to go under the knife, take reassurance in the fact that it’s not permanent.

Take heart in this comment by Professor Mark Birch-Machin, Professor of Molecular Dermatology at the National Innovative Centre for Ageing at Newcastle University.

“The good news is that it’s temporary. Skin has a tremendous ability to bounce back and renew itself if you do the right things like eat a better diet and those measures will vastly improve your overall health and banish the perception that you have prematurely aged.”

This is true not only of your skin but also your entire body. It’s only natural that the stresses of lockdown will be reflected in our complexion and general wellbeing . However, making a few healthy lifestyle choices will see your face brighten and encourage you to take more steps in the right direction.

We talk of the chronological clock, which is our actual age, but we also have a measure in our biological clock . Our biological clock relates to how well our body is ageing. You could be 70 yet your body acts like that of a 50-year-old, or you could be 50 with a body that has a biological age of a 70 year-old. It’s remarkable how bad habits truly can make a difference.

No matter how old you look and feel right now, you can take steps to become more youthful.

Let’s start with perking up the skin:

  • Switch to a diet rich in nutrients; it’s been far too easy to munch away at calorie ladened snacks whilst binge watching a recommended TV series. Now’s the time to start adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet to enjoy a full range of nutrients.
  • The same goes for alcohol; a couple of glasses a day over the weekend, easily slipped into a nightly bottle of wine. Did you know that 29% of us agreed that we’ve drunk more alcohol during lockdown? Alcohol is one of the primary causes of weight gain, it also leads to facial broken capillaries. Top up on the amount of water you drink so you’re less inclined to consume as much booze.
  • Supplements have been a godsend during lockdown. It’s so easy to take a few capsules or top up your beauty regime with a collagen or hydration drink to look after overall health and boost our complexion.
  • Beauty sleep isn’t just a saying, getting enough sleep can actually boost your ‘youth hormone’, known  the Human Growth Hormone and promote a healthy metabolism. Get to bed early and remove all tech devices from the room for a more peaceful sleep.
  • At last, beauty clinics are open again. Even small treatments like having your eyebrows shaped and eyelashes tinted can make a huge difference to how we feel about ourselves. A face peel will brighten your skin and a whole range of facials can have you glowing as you walk out. You can check out Rejuvenated clinics here.
  • Did you commit to exercise when we first went into lockdown? If you did, you are one of the real winners of the last 6 months.  But if like most of us, you found it easy to drift from day to day, it really isn’t too late to turn back the clock. Numerous studies link exercise to healthier eating habits, they also release endorphins to give us a feeling of wellbeing.
  • Look in the mirror and smile. When we smile it acts as a trigger to the mind and body to release chemicals that include pleasant emotions(1)

Is Your Mask Causing Acne Break Outs? Read Our Tips for ‘Maskne’ Sufferers

Wearing a protective face mask can cause maskne

It’s important for us to wear masks to protect ourselves – and others – from the dangers of COVID-19. However, you may have found that wearing a mask has created congestion and acne break outs. This new skin condition is making the headlines here are our tips for ‘Maskne’ sufferers

The combination of stress and wearing a mask is causing problems for many of us; even if we don’t usually experience break outs.

At Rejuvenated, we’ve had an increased number of customers asking how they can deal with a flare up of acne on their chin and jaw line. And our Rejuvenated clinicians have seen a high rise in enquiries for acne related problems.

Why can wearing a mask cause acne?

Wearing a mask creates friction on the skin which can irritate hair follicles. Exhalation creates a warm damp environment which is the ideal environment for bacterial organisms to thrive. If you’re back at the gym you may have notice that exercising exasperates the problem.

Top tips to beat maskne

  • If possible, wear a cotton mask to reduce the risk of inflammation
  • Wash reusable masks regularly at 60 degrees
  • Use a gentle cleanser twice daily to keep the skin clean
  • Avoid using harsh products to dry out the acne as this may cause eczema flare ups and break down the already delicate skin barrier.
  • Don’t use heavy occlusive creams and opt for water-based products and lighter serums
  • Avoid all perfumed products
  • Avoid oil-based foundation, try a mineral make up, BB or CC cream. These have a lighter coverage and are less likely to block the pores
  • Wait 15 minutes after applying creams, make up to avoid sticking to the mask
  • Eat a diet rich in vegetables and drink lots of water(1).
  • Try skin soothing supplements, Skin perfecting Complex contains pre and probiotics with skin calming botanicals

Discover how the ingredients in Skin Perfecting Complex help to calm acne here.

Can Drinking Electrolytes Hydrate Your Skin’s Natural Moisture Factor?

Our skin is the most incredible organ, not only does it protect us from germs and pollutants, but it also allows just enough water to enter the body when bathing. Is it possible that drinking a few electrolytes can hydrate your skin’s natural moisture to protect it from the inside out.

The cells in the outermost layer – the stratum corneum – are biologically dead but biochemically very active, containing interactive substances that help to repair and regenerate to keep the skin smooth, hydrated and healthy. These components include amino acids, peptides and minerals which together are called the Natural Moisture Factor (NMF).

What does the NATURAL MOISTURE FACTOR (NMF) do?

The NMF maintains adequate skin hydration to ensure:

  • Skin maintains its suppleness
  • Protects from damage
  • Enables enzymes to dissolve dead skin cells
  • Supports the stratum corneum barrier function

If the NMF becomes compromised, it can lead to skin inflammation such as eczema and dermatitis. The components of NMF work as powerful humectants to attract and bind water to the cells. It is so effective, that the NMF actually dissolves itself within the water it has absorbed.

How can electrolytes help to keep your skins natural moisture factor healthy?

Electrolytes are minerals that conduct electricity when mixed in water. Many of our cells run on electricity and once they are hydrated, they switch on a chain of reactions allowing cells to work more effectively to create energy and regulate PH levels. The minerals dissolve in the body’s fluids to support a healthy fluid balance, transfer nutrients into cells whilst also removing waste.

Why are electrolytes important to hydrate skin?

Low levels of potassium and sodium electrolytes make our skin vulnerable to dryness and dehydration. Calcium and potassium promote a strong epidermal barrier(1), promote cell regeneration and improve the fatty acid content of the skin.

As water alone can’t replenish electrolytes levels, we recommend considering an electrolyte supplement.

Together, calcium and potassium promote a strong epidermal barrier, boost cell regeneration, and improve the fatty acid content of the skin. All of these components are vital to maintaining homeostasis and managing trans epidermal water loss to promote healthy glowing skin.

Discover more about the components of the natural moisture factor here.
